![]() With his friend and fellow jazz lover Michael MacKay, he founded JazzSLC with the mission of bringing the world’s best jazz musicians to the Beehive State. While there were some venues for live jazz music in Utah, by the 1990s Hanks noticed that performances were dwindling. Throughout college and his career as the owner of Holladay Pharmacy, Hanks remained a dedicated fan of jazz music-he sold CDs at the pharmacy and was a regular listener of Wes Bowen’s nightly KUER show All That Jazz. “That single recording changed my life,” he says. He still remembers the album that hooked him-Ahmad Jamal’s At the Pershing: But Not for Me. When a music appreciation teacher at the now-closed Granite High School in South Salt Lake introduced his class to the genre, Hanks was immediately captivated. Hanks’ love for jazz started in public school, of all places. ![]() “Our only true art form is jazz.” Hanks has spread his love for America’s music and welcomed dozens of world-class musicians to perform in Utah. Decades later, though, Hanks is undoubtedly an influential figure in the Utah music community-despite the fact that he still hasn’t picked up an instrument. Raised by a single mother and grandmother, there wasn’t enough money for Hanks to purchase an instrument or take private lessons, and he doesn’t recall listening to music much as a child. Gordon Hanks didn’t grow up in a musical family. ![]() What is Spotify Premium And How Can I Avail of Its Benefits? You can make a plastic green key if you want to be sure, but otherwise you'll have to plan ahead and make sure they're distracted. It is important that you keep track of the targeted inmate in order to distract them quickly many jobs take place in a single room locked with a Green Key Door. The later the inmate is, the quicker they'll wake up and try to reach their job room, so you will have to keep attacking/distracting them as they wake up from the infirmary beds. If you are unable to tie them down when you knock them out, be sure to follow the medics to the Infirmary. You can also tie them up with a Length of Rope or Roll of Duct Tape, but this causes their OPN to drop to zero. Over the last decade or so, it's been used in responsive web design to help create a more seamless, immersive experience. It's basically an optical illusion that takes advantage of the way the human eye sees closer objects as larger and faster than things that are further away. If you are a Nikon shooter you can always buy a new full frame camera like the capable and affordable Nikon D610. If you are interested in that other high-end Nikon camera the Nikon D800 you can read my 2017 perspective on the Nikon D800 here.įull frame still seems to be the holy grail of photography for a lot of prosumer APS-C camera-users. The only newer Nikon that comes close is the quirky Nikon Df, with its high-end Nikon D4 sensor but it also lacks the rugged pro-style body the D700 has. The D800 is a different camera aimed at a different audience and the D750 looks like a reasonable upgrade for the D700-users but can’t quite match the D700’s rugged body. That was probably why Nikon was a little reluctant to introduce a ‘real’ new Nikon D700. That was why a lot of professional and semi-professional photographers chose to buy a D700 instead of the much more expensive D3. The D700 offers a 12 megapixel resolution and an, for that time, incredible ISO range going from ISO200 to ISO6400 native. It shares a lot of internals with the D3, like the sensor and the autofocus system. It was introduced in 2008 as the smaller and more affordable alternative for the professional Nikon D3. The Nikon D700 is still seen as one of the best and most iconic cameras Nikon has introduced in the last decennia. Thinking about other options? Read my 2023 review of the original Sony A7, the Sony A7RIII, Nikon D750or Nikon D800. So if you are considering a D750: I’d say go for it! If you are still in doubt: read my review and see if this camera is for you. If I had 300-400 euros burning a hole in my pocket I’d rather have a former high end brick that will withstand about anything you throw at it than a flimsy feeling mirrorless with a cheap lens. For its time it was one of the best cameras you could buy, and now it is still a very good camera you can buy for the price of a mid-end APS-C mirrorless camera. But unless you are printing all your photo’s in roomsized-wallprints you won’t be dissapointed by the images you get out of this older camera. Yes, newer full frame models have even better image quality and many more megapixels. The D700 is still a very fine camera in 2023. ![]() I’ve written this original review a few years ago, but everything I wrote back then still stands. ![]() If you are reading this you are probably thinking about buying a second hand NIkon D700. Introduction to my 2023 review of the Nikon D700 ![]() We spent some time in class calculating Babylonian “reciprocals,” (pdf) and it was surprisingly difficult. I don't know how the people who used this system really thought of reciprocals. Those numbers also multiply together to make 1. Or we could interpret 5 as 5 sixties (300), and 12 as 12/3600. If we interpret 12 as 12/60 (1/5), then we can multiply it by 5 to make 1. Of course, there is a way to interpret the Babylonian symbols for 5 and 12 as reciprocals in the traditional sense, again because of the ambiguity that the lack of zero adds. ![]() It would make some sense only if we didn't have a zero, so 1 and 10 looked the same. It would be like us thinking of 4 and 25 as reciprocals because they multiply to 100. Why would this definition of reciprocal make sense? Because when you’re writing in base 60 without a zero, 60 looks just like 1! So do 1/60, 3600, and any other power of 60. But Babylonian reciprocal tables, which made calculations quicker, listed any two numbers that multiplied to a power of 60 as “reciprocals.” For example, 5 and 12 are “reciprocals” in this sense because they multiply to 60. We usually think of reciprocals as number pairs like 2 and 1/2 that multiply together to equal 1. One of the strange consequences of the lack of zero comes up in reciprocals. The oldest documented zero is surprisingly modern: it’s in a temple in India, and it dates from about 875 CE. They never made the leap to using a zero symbol at the end of a number to eliminate the ambiguity completely. But 60 and 1 would always be written identically. That way they could tell the number 3601, which would have been written 1,0,1, from 61, which would be written 1,1. ![]() ![]() Later, they added a symbol for zero, but it was only used for zeroes that were in the middle of the number, never on either end. In Plimpton 322, the tablet we studied in class, there are some gaps between numerals that represent zeros in the middle of a number, the way the 0 in 101 represents zero tens. I should say that it’s not quite true that the Babylonians didn’t have a symbol for zero. Without it, the numbers we write are inherently ambiguous, and we have to use context clues to figure out what order of magnitude is meant in a given situation. Why do we need a symbol that literally means nothing? But zero is what makes it possible for me to tell 1 from 10 from 1,000,000 from 0.1. The Babylonians didn’t have a symbol for zero. No, the biggest issue we had was nothing. Image: public domain, via sugarfish and Wikimedia Commons. Unlike the Hindu-Arabic numerals we use today, Babylonian numerals “look like” the numbers they represent.īabylonian numerals are surprisingly easy to decipher. The biggest difficulty my students and I had deciphering these numbers was not the fact that there were so many extra numerals to keep track of. 25 means “two tens, five ones." 52 has the same symbols, but it means "five tens, two ones." Similarly, 1,3 in sexagesimal means “one sixty, 3 ones,” or 63, and 3,57 means “three sixties, fifty-seven ones,” or 237. To us, the digit 2 can mean 2, 20, 200, or 2/10, and so on, depending on where it appears in a number. Their notation is not terribly hard to decipher, partly because they use a positional notation system, just like we do. The Babylonian number system uses base 60 (sexagesimal) instead of 10. Image: Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.Īs I told my class on Thursday, the theme of the first week of our math history course was “easy algebra is hard in base 60.” We started the semester in ancient Mesopotamia, trying to understand Babylonian* mathematical notation and decipher Plimpton 322, an enigmatic tablet from about 1800 BCE. Plimpton 322, an ancient Mesopotamian mathematical tablet whose purpose is still a mystery. |
